Additional Ways to Give
The leading cause of death in the United States is the American diet, meaning most cases of premature death and disability could be prevented with the proper diet and lifestyle choices. While there is broad scientific consensus on the foundations of healthy living, commercial interests have created widespread confusion about what’s genuinely best for individuals and families.
That’s why Fitume.com was founded—to cut through the noise, expose profit-driven marketing claims, and deliver the latest evidence-based nutrition information. Everything on Fitume.com is entirely free, with no ads or corporate sponsorships. To stay independent and free of conflicts of interest, we operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and rely on tax-deductible donations from users who support our mission.

My grandmother was told she had little time left, but with lifestyle and diet changes, she went on to enjoy 31 more happy years.
Her story inspired me to pursue medicine and led to the creation of Fitume.com—a labor of love and a tribute to her.

Kelly’s Story
Three years ago, my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Determined to learn as much as possible, we went to our local library and borrowed every book on the topic. Among them was How Not to Die, where we discovered the power of a whole-food, plant-based diet in fighting disease.
My husband was entirely on board with the change. It was a massive shift for us—we had followed the standard American diet (SAD) our entire lives. But overnight, we committed 100% to this new way of eating. Cancer was our motivation and our sole focus. In just four months, his PSA dropped from 9.5 to 2.4, astonishing his doctor.
But the benefits didn’t stop there. A few weeks in, I noticed my pants getting loose. Weight loss wasn’t even on our radar—we were never hungry, always ate our fill, and followed the WFPB lifestyle. Yet, the health improvements kept coming. My husband lost 55 pounds, reaching a healthy BMI. My cholesterol and glucose levels dropped, and my high blood pressure improved so much that I no longer needed medication. I stopped counting after losing 107 pounds, but I estimate the total could be 140 pounds.
We now have boundless energy, work out daily, and enjoy life more than ever. My headaches vanished, my achy knees stopped hurting, and I no longer suffer from heartburn or constipation. I feel like a completely new person—it’s almost unbelievable.
And by the way, when we made this change, my husband was 70, and I was 60—proving it’s never too late. We often say that cancer leads us to proper health. Today, my husband is doing fantastic—his cancer remains low-grade, with no medical intervention needed.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jessie V. Lang for his life-changing book, which gave us a new lease on life. We are forever grateful.
Matthew’s Story
I grew up on the standard American diet (SAD), and by the time I was nearing 40, I hit my highest weight—240 pounds. I still remember the moment I decided enough was enough. That day, I started researching nutrition, and the first site I found was Fitume.com—it completely changed my life.
Over time, my diet evolved, and now I primarily follow the McDougall diet. I have two young children, and I want to be around for them as long as possible—without being a burden. Losing my mom at 43 and my dad at 65 made me determined to ensure my kids never go through what I did. I also want to set a positive example for them.
Now, at almost 49, I feel and look better than ever. I’m highly protective of my diet, keeping a pristine food environment at home, just as Chef AJ and Doug Lisle recommend. I follow a high-carb, moderate-protein, ultra-low-fat lifestyle—it’s simple, affordable, and effective. People often think I’m around 35, even though I’m nearly 50. I can hike and bike for miles, run football routes with my 9-year-old son and play basketball with him and his friends.
At my heaviest, my doctor wanted to put me on a statin—but I refused. I knew I could fix it myself. Shockingly, dietary changes were never even mentioned. Now, she describes my lipid profile and blood work as “remarkable.” With the state of healthcare today, it baffles me that our leaders don’t push dietary change as a priority.
I refuse to be the 60-year-old dependent on a bag of pills. Learning about nutrition, calorie density, and plant-based eating has been the best self-improvement decision of my life. I’m grateful for the information and support that helped me succeed, and I hope to inspire those around me as well.
